![]() ![]() If applicable, the instrument has a wide assortment of articulations, including standard and extended playing techniques.Orchestral instruments and ensembles are the most challenging and expensive libraries to produce, hence the associated prices. The sounds sound real (if they are intended to, that is).I base these recommendations on 12 criteria: But what is here I can strongly vouch for. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to play everything available on the market, and there are many I hope to try in the future that are not on this list. I have assembled a list below of my current favorite Kontakt instruments. But if you want access to the largest variety of 3rd party libraries you really need to get Kontakt. Check out my article “The Fundamentals of Sampling Instruments and Libraries” for information on samplers in general. If you choose to make your own sampling instruments these are great choices and are definitely more user friendly. There are of course many other options for sampling instruments and libraries including Sampler & Simpler from Ableton and Sampler (formerly EXS24) & Quick Sampler from Logic Pro. The full version also comes with their entry-level bundle, Komplete 13, currently selling at $599. There is a free version that has limited functionality and the full version which sells for $399. ![]() Sometimes there are bow-change sounds after attacks as well from different bowings being stitched together.Kontakt, the sampling instrument from Native Instruments, is arguably the most used sampling platform on the market with hundreds of 3rd party sample libraries available. Sometimes you’ll hear a bow scrape after the intervals (from the short legato). This is not a particularly “clean” library. The same-note bow-change repetitions are somewhat subtle at times (sounding more like “movement” than distinct bow-changes), particularly on the higher strings and decca mic. However, it will work with the sustains themselves. On the balance (B) page, compressing and expanding the CC/Vel Dyn Range doesn’t work very effectively on the legatos, because of the way they’re mapped. There is some mysterious disk spiking happening on occasion, but it doesn’t seem to lead to drop-outs.The harp was not de-noised and by some standards could be considered fairly noisy. This simply comes with the territory of pulling samples from connected performances on the same pitch in an ambient room. There is some level of ambience-bleed / “bump” on the hard attacks if they’re played in standalone isolation or you’re using mostly decca. However there is also an option to have all the notes ring out in the GUI. NOTE ON THE HARP: this patch works best if you have a sustain pedal, considering the delay. All the elements of the library (legatos, sustains, attacks, same-note bow-change repetitions, etc) are on the same delay. The library is heavily optimized for this delay amount. NOTE ON DELAY: this library has a moderately delayed response when playing (140 ms based on the close mics) to further the musicality of the legatos and releases. ** the same hall as Oceania, Oceania II, Angry Brass Pro, the Perfperc series, and others.
